Startup runway is how many months your company can keep operating before it runs out of cash, at your current rate of spending. You calculate it by dividing your cash on hand by your net monthly burn — monthly expenses minus monthly revenue. When revenue covers expenses, runway is effectively unlimited.
At this burn, you run out of cash around November 2026.
How runway is calculated
The formula is simple: runway = cash on hand ÷ net monthly burn, where net monthly burn = monthly expenses − monthly revenue. If you have $150,000 in the bank and burn $28,000 a month after revenue, that's about 5.4 months of runway. The calculator above also models revenue growth month by month, so if your income is climbing it extends the date you run out — or removes it entirely once revenue passes expenses.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good runway for a startup?
Most investors like to see 18–24 months of runway after a raise, and you generally don't want to drop below 6 months at any time. Below 6 months, cutting burn or raising becomes urgent — fundraising itself often takes 3–6 months to close.
How do I extend my runway?
There are only two levers: spend less or earn more. Cut or delay non-essential expenses, slow hiring, and grow revenue. Even modest monthly revenue growth compounds — the growth field above shows how it pushes your out-of-cash date further out.
What is net burn rate?
Net burn is how much cash you lose each month after revenue: monthly expenses minus monthly revenue. If you spend $40,000 and earn $12,000, your net burn is $28,000 a month. Gross burn ignores revenue; runway depends on net burn.
Does revenue growth change my runway?
Yes. If revenue grows fast enough to catch up to your expenses before the cash runs out, your runway becomes effectively unlimited — you reach profitability first. Add a month-over-month growth rate above to model that.
